UK Sport is supporting the third Commonwealth Sports Development Conference in Glasgow on 3 and 4 June 2010, in which sport practitioners, policy makers and various types of funders will be coming together to explore issues around delivering sports-for-development and sports development programmes worldwide.
The conference will bring together many of UK Sport’s overseas partners, enabling them to network with other colleagues and develop learning opportunities around themes such as sport and coaching development, capacity building, and funding.
One of these UK Sport partners is the Kicking AIDS OUT (KAO) Network. This is a fast growing important network facilitating and supporting its partners (largely NGOs) with practical tools and the opportunity to share and discuss their unique experiences of combining sport, physical activity and HIV and AIDS education.
KAO provides a platform to share their learning about sport and its current and potential impacts in successful HIV and AIDS education methodologies, youth leadership development, girl’s empowerment, and the promotion of healthy lifestyle choices. A major focus of the network is to support locally run initiatives in building up capacity of youth leaders as Kicking AIDS Out facilitators so that the concept can be embedded into the fabric of community programmes and sport initiatives.
The network is moving into a new phase with partners supporting regionalisation processes, thereby strengthening local ownership. The main KAO secretariat will from August 2010 be four people strong. The aim is to enable more support to the organisations in the network to integrate and implement the Kicking AIDS Out programme.
In addition the main secretariat in Cape Town South Africa will be hosting four interns during 2010. The interns are all young leaders within their respective originations; South East District Youth Empowerment League (SEDYEL); Trinidad & Tobago Alliance for Sport and Physical Education (TTASPE); Christian Sports Contact (CHRISC); and SCORE Namibia. These young people a, have the potential to lead the sport for development agenda five to ten years from now. The interns will contribute to improvements in procedures, guidelines and training materials and deliver on tasks related to special events such as the Biennial meeting, Zone VI games, Next Step Conference and Leader Level two training.
The KAO network will celebrate ten years in 2011 and this year the network’s history will be written by one of the interns.
KAO and many of the member organisations (and UK Sport partners) will be attending the Glasgow conference- a great learning and networking opportunity for all involved.
