The final leg of the FINA/Li-Ning Diving World Series, due to be held in Sheffield this week, has been cancelled following the continued closure of air space across Britain as a result of the volcanic eruption in Iceland and ensuing ash cloud.

The FINA/Li-Ning Diving World Series, powered by British Gas, was set to take place at the Sheffield International Venues managed Ponds Forge on 23 and 24 April.
It will now be held in Veracruz in Mexico following the completion of the second leg of the series on Sunday.

British Swimming Chief Executive David Sparkes commented: "While this is a huge disappointment for British Swimming and fans of diving, the situation is beyond our control. To ensure the athletes can resume the competition we have reluctantly agreed to accept the generous offer of the Mexican Government and Federation to step in to help in what is clearly a challenging time for everyone in Europe.”

Britain will welcome the elite of international diving at the FINA Diving World Series for the fourth year running as Sheffield prepares to host the final leg of the prestigious series. Ponds Forge International Sports Centre will host the world’s top eight divers in each event just two months out from the FINA World Cup.

At the 2009 FINA Diving World Series the British team saw Tom Daley secure silver in the 10m Platform finishing just behind Olympic 10m Synchro Champion Liang Huo. He went on to become the country’s youngest World Champion when he won gold in Rome in the summer.

The British team enjoyed further success at the Sheffield leg last year when Ben Swain and Nick Robinson-Baker won bronze on their way to winning the overall Series title in the 3m Synchro. Helen and Carol Galashan finished in fourth place in the women’s 10m Platform as they showcased the synchro Armstand dive.

British Swimming Chief Executive David Sparkes said: “The FINA Diving World Series is a major event when our elite divers place themselves head-to-head against the very best in the world and this event is critical in our preparation for the all important Olympics in 2012.”
