Weightlifting featured on the Olympic programme at the first modern Olympic Games, held in Athens in 1896, and was reintroduced at the Antwerp 1920 Games as a permanent addition.
British Weight Lifting were represented by four athletes at the Tokyo 2020 Games with Zoe Smith, Emily Campbell, Emily Muskett and Sarah Davies all representing Team GB, making it the biggest British Weight Lifting team at a Games since 1992 and the biggest number of female British Olympic Weight Lifters to secure a place at the Olympics.
In Tokyo, Campbell made further history by becoming Great Britain's first ever female Olympic medallist and the first Brit to win a weightlifting medal at the Olympics since David Mercer in 1984.
