Overview

Karate is a martial art that originates in Japan, with the origins of the sport tracing back thousands of years. However, it will make its first appearance on the Games programme at Tokyo 2020 with men and women competing in two forms; Kata and Kumite events.

In Kata, athletes demonstrate offensive and defensive moves against a virtual enemy. In Kumite, two athletes face each other in a fight. Athletes will compete at the Nippon Budokan, the spiritual home of Japanese martial arts and a legacy venue from the Tokyo 1964 Games.

Team GB’s Jordan Thomas will be one to watch, winning World title in 2016 and numerous European medals. No doubt an Olympic medal will be the next target on his list.
