Medals & More: A Conversation with Dame Katherine Grainger - Season 2 Episode 5

Published 22 February 2021

Listen to the fifth episode of season two here.

Welcome to the fifth episode of season two of Medals & More, the podcast taking you behind the scenes of British Olympic and Paralympic sport.

Hosted by Dame Katherine Grainger , Britain’s most decorated female Olympian and Chair of UK Sport,  Medals & More  will inspire, engage and educate you with insights and stories from the Olympic and Paralympic system.

With the Beijing Olympics due to get underway in just under a year, this month's episode looks at the world of winter sport and features two guests with a combined total of six Winter Games between them.

With a particular focus on opportunity in adversity, both guests have experienced both the best and worst of what sport can provide. Elise Christie first competed in Vancouver 2010 before heartbreak at both Sochi and PyeongChang means she is yet to add an Olympic medal to her haul of European and World Championships. Despite these set-backs and her lack of competition since 2018, she is still hoping Beijing could provide the one jewell missing from her speed skating crown.

Like Elise, Dave Murdoch has also been to three Winter Games and disappointment in 2006 and 2010 will have only made his silver medal at Sochi 2014 even sweeter. Dave also now holds the title of Olympic Head Coach for British Curling and will be hoping to see even more success in 2022.

Listen below for a fascinating and open chat with both Elise and Dave as they discuss how to overcome set-backs and the lessons that can be learnt from apparent failure.

Trigger warning: The below episode contains conversations on self-harm and suicide. If you, or someone you know have been affected by any of these issues raised please take the time to seek help and support. In the UK, the Samaritans can be reached for free on 116 123.
