Edinburgh to host Fina/Midea Diving World Series

Published 6 February 2013

Diving’s elite will return to the UK in April for the FINA/Midea Diving World Series which will be held at the newly refurbished Royal Commonwealth Pool in Edinburgh.

Thanks to a partnership between British Swimming, UK Sport, Event Scotland and the City of Edinburgh Council, the event will make its debut in Scotland on the 19th to 21st April 2013 and will feature the top ranked divers in the world.

The FINA/Midea Diving World Series will be the first international competition at the pool since its refurbishment. In 2014, it will be used as the venue for the diving at the Commonwealth Games.

UK Sport has provided £100,000 from its National Lottery backed Gold Event Series to support the event.

Esther Nicholls, Head of Major Events at UK Sport, said: “Through the Gold Event Series, UK Sport is committed to bringing over 70 of the world’s most prestigious sporting events to the UK, in order to establish a lasting legacy from London 2012 and Glasgow 2014.

“It will be fantastic to welcome the world’s best divers, including the British team who performed so well at London 2012, to Edinburgh for the FINA/Midea Diving World Series this year.”

Paul Bush OBE, Chief Operating Officer for EventScotland said: “The appetite for sport in Great Britain continues to grow and it is hugely exciting to welcome another major international event to our growing sporting portfolio.

“Scotland is the perfect stage for events, and the FINA/Midea Diving World Series is an excellent example of the events legacy we are already seeing from hosting the 2014 Commonwealth Games, with the beautiful refurbishment of Edinburgh’s Royal Commonwealth Pool.”

David Sparkes, British Swimming CEO said: “British Swimming welcomes the best divers in the world to Edinburgh, a venue that has seen many great events and in this modern, refurbished venue we will now see the beginning of a new period in the history of the pool.

“We wish the divers well as they start the next chapter in the life of this fabulous building.”

The City of Edinburgh Council’s Festival and Events Champion, Cllr Steve Cardownie, said: "Edinburgh has won international renown as a premier events destination and this new fixture in our packed calendar is further evidence of the city’s appeal.

“I’m sure the people of Edinburgh will turn out in their thousands to lend their support

“The event will allow us to showcase the newly-refurbished Royal Commonwealth Pool on the world stage and, of course, provide the perfect warm-up for the Commonwealth Games the following year.”

British Swimming has launched the FINA/Midea Diving World Series website which can be found at www.finadivingworldseries.org

All event information can be located here as well as information on when tickets will go on sale.
