Trainee Director: Live Sports Broadcasting

Vinco Sport Ltd
Organisation
Vinco Sport Ltd
Salary
£12.71 per hour
Location
Wilmslow, UK
Contract type
Paid Internship (Part time)
Closing date
31 January 2027
Job Description
Vinco Sport Ltd is looking for a Trainee Director to join our studio team on event days and help deliver live coverage of track and field and cross country events. You’ll learn how to follow the competition, coordinate camera coverage and choose the shots that help audiences understand and enjoy the action.

Based in our Wilmslow studio, you’ll work alongside the production team and develop your directing skills through observation, guided practice and progressively greater responsibility.

About the role

You’ll support the planning and delivery of live broadcasts, learning how to bring camera feeds, commentary, graphics and replays together into clear, engaging coverage. As your confidence and ability develop, you’ll take responsibility for directing sections of a broadcast under supervision.

Your responsibilities may include:
- Reviewing event schedules, start lists and production plans before coverage begins.
- Following the action across multiple camera feeds and identifying the key moments to show.
- Learning to select shots and call camera changes at the right time.
- Giving clear instructions to camera operators over the crew’s communication system.
- Coordinating with colleagues working on commentary, graphics and replays.
- Helping manage coverage when events overlap or schedules change.
- Supporting studio checks and broadcast preparation.
- Reviewing coverage with the team and using feedback to improve.
- Helping with other production tasks needed to keep broadcasts running smoothly.

About you

We’re looking for someone who:
- Has a strong interest in athletics and live sports broadcasting.
- Enjoys following several things at once while keeping sight of the main action.
- Communicates clearly, listens carefully and works well with others.
- Can stay focused and make considered decisions under time pressure.
- Is organised, reliable and willing to prepare thoroughly.
- Responds positively to feedback and is keen to develop practical skills.
- Can attend our Wilmslow studio on agreed event days, including weekends.
Previous directing experience is not essential. Experience in student media, live streaming, sports coverage, video production or team coordination would be useful. An understanding of track and field or cross country is helpful, along with a willingness to learn the events and their rules.

What you’ll gain

- Practical experience in a live sports broadcasting studio.
- Skills in shot selection, camera direction and live storytelling.
- An understanding of how a production team coordinates coverage of athletics events.
- Supervised opportunities to direct live coverage as your skills develop.
- Guidance and feedback from the broadcast team.
How to apply
Please email jobs@vincosport.com and attach your CV as a single PDF named surname-firstname.pdf. Include a short covering note of three to four sentences telling us why you’re interested in live sports broadcasting, what you’d like to learn and an example of when you worked well with others or stayed organised under pressure. Your example can come from education, work, volunteering or everyday life—we don’t expect previous directing or broadcasting experience. If you have examples of videos or other media projects you’ve worked on, you’re welcome to include links, but these are not required. We welcome applications from everyone. If you need adjustments at any stage of the process, tell us, and we will make them.
