Contract type
Permanent (Part time)
Closing date

Job Description
Join the team at Uppingham School Sports Centre and play an important part in creating a safe, welcoming and enjoyable environment for pupils, members and visitors.

This is a great opportunity to become part of a supportive team within one of the country’s leading independent schools, working in high-quality facilities and helping to provide an excellent experience for everyone who uses them.

Opened in 2010, Uppingham School Sports Centre is a dual-use facility, serving both the School and around 1,300 public members. Facilities include a six-court sports hall, 25-metre swimming pool, 60-station fitness studio, gymnasium, squash courts and dance studios, providing a varied and engaging environment in which to work.

As a Leisure Assistant, you’ll be one of the first points of contact for people using our outstanding sports facilities. You’ll provide a friendly and professional service while helping to ensure the Sports Centre remains safe, clean and well organised at all times.

A key part of the role will be lifeguarding, supervising swimmers and responding appropriately when assistance is needed. You’ll also support the wider operation of the Centre, from setting up activities and events and carrying out safety checks to keeping facilities clean and tidy and helping members and visitors with their enquiries.

We currently have the following shifts available:

• Friday: 5.00pm–10.00pm
• Saturday: 10.00am–6.00pm during term time and 10.00am–2.30pm during School holidays
• Every other Sunday: 7.30am–5.00pm

We’re happy to be flexible around these hours. If you’re able to cover all of the available shifts, that would be ideal, but we’re equally happy to consider applicants who can commit to only some of them.

About you

You’ll be approachable, dependable and confident communicating with a wide range of people, including pupils, colleagues and members of the public. You’ll have a strong customer-service focus, enjoy working as part of a team and be able to use your initiative to deal with situations in a proactive and professional way.

You should hold a National Pool Lifeguard Qualification (NPLQ), or be able to achieve the qualification within one month of joining us. Previous experience in a customer-focused environment is essential, while experience of working in a leisure centre, a Level 2 Fitness Instructor qualification or an SEQ Swimming Teacher Level 1 or 2 qualification would be advantageous.

What we offer:

When you join us, you become part of a community that appreciates and supports its team members. You will enjoy a range of benefits that reflect our appreciation:

• Free Westfield Healthcare
• Free membership of dual-use Sports Centre (£25 annual joining fee)
• Free staff lunches in term-time
• School fee discount for children of Uppingham staff (pro-rated for part-time staff)
• Retail, gym, supermarket, cinema and restaurant discounts
• Cycle to work scheme
• Employee Assistance Programme
• Occupational Health Services
• Free annual flu jabs
• Recognised as a “Disability Confident” employer
• Recognised as a “Mindful” employer
• Favourable rates and terms with local nursery
• Complimentary staff ticket to selected School performances
• Discount at local coffee shop for Uppingham staff

The closing date for applications is 09:00am, Friday 30th Oct, 2026.

Uppingham School is committed to safeguarding and promoting the welfare of children. Successful candidates must be willing to undergo full screening in accordance with Keeping Children Safe in Education (KCSiE), including an Enhanced Disclosure and Barring Service check. Issues relating to safeguarding and promoting the welfare of pupils will be explored at interview.
