Job Description
The Royal Air Force Central Fund is seeking an Independent Trustee for its Board. This non-executive position will oversee the strategic direction and growth of one of the country’s most exciting sporting bodies.

About the RAF Central Fund

The RAF Central Fund is a 100-year-old, grant giving charity that supports the 30,000 serving personnel and over 40 stations that make up the RAF. The Fund is the primary funder of the 55 RAF sports associations and the sports kit and equipment that allows personnel to participate in their chosen sports from grass roots to Olympic level.

Sponsorship is one of three sources of income for the Fund, the other two being an endowment and the RAF Sports Lottery. In order to grow sports opportunities for personnel, the RAF Central Fund is currently looking to recruit a volunteer Board member that can help them capitalise on the new construct and find ways to augment and enhance the new model.

The RAF Central Fund Exec and Board are committed to their vision of supporting all serving personnel to develop their full potential through sport and physical activity and are looking for a like-minded individual to join them.

The Board
The RAF Central Fund is a company limited by guarantee. The Board is made up of a mix of serving, ex serving and independent members (including the Chair) all of whom abide by the Nolan principles.
The Board meets three times each year either virtually or in London or the Buckinghamshire office.

The Role
Board members can serve up to 3 three-year terms. It is anticipated that the time commitment is up to one day per month after the induction period. This includes attendance at up to three Board meetings a year.

Expenses will be paid in accordance with the RAF Central Fund’s expense policy.

The duties of a Board member include:
• To ensure that the Fund complies with its Articles of Association, company law and any other relevant legislation or regulations.
• To contribute actively to the role of the Board in giving firm strategic direction to the organisation.
• To ensure the effective and efficient administration of the Fund.
• To ensure the financial stability of the Fund through commercial income.
• In addition to the above statutory duties, each Board member should use any specific skills, knowledge or experience they have to help the Board reach sound decisions. This may involve scrutinising board papers, leading discussions, focusing on key issues, providing advice and guidance on new initiatives or on other issues in which the Board member has special expertise.
• It is expected that each Board member sits on a sub-committee working group.

Key Competencies:
• A high level of objectivity and independent judgement
• A high level of integrity and probity
• Ability to think and act strategically.
• An ability to work in partnership.
• A commitment to equity and equal opportunities
• Ability to communicate concisely and effectively
• An enthusiasm for sport

Skills and Experience:
The RAF Central Fund is seeking a Trustee with experience in one of the following areas:
• Finance, accounting or investment management.
• Legal or regulatory compliance.
• Governance and risk management.
• Human resources and organisational development.
• Charity leadership.
• Digital, technology or cyber.
• Commercial or fundraising.
• Sport, health or wellbeing.
• Military or public sector leadership.
How to apply
Applications Closing date for applications is midnight on Monday 30th November. To submit a CV and letter of application or to arrange an informal chat with the Chair or CEO, please contact RPerriam@rafcf.org.uk. The RAF Central Fund is committed to equality, diversity and inclusion and welcomes applications from all suitably qualified candidates.
