ADAMS (Anti-Doping Administration & Management System)

What is ADAMS?

ADAMS is a web-based system developed by the World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA) which can be used to manage key elements of an anti-doping programme:

Athlete whereabouts

Athletes enter their information directly into the system and make modifications as necessary, whilst anti-doping organisations can monitor failure to provide sufficient information and notify athletes as and when required.

TUE management

Athletes can submit TUE applications online, and receive confirmation of approval or otherwise directly from the relevant issuing body. TUE information can be shared amongst all relevant parties.

Clearing house

Sharing of data for in- and out-of-competition tests, including information on adverse analytical findings, with greater ability to provide accurate statistics at a national and international level

Doping control

Management of the testing pool and test distribution, issuing test information to Doping Control Officers (DCOs) and results management, including details of the hearing, sanction and appeals process.

What are the benefits of ADAMS?

  • It is an integrated system, with all the data from international and national anti-doping programmes available in one place
  • It is a time and cost effective method for the management of day-to-day operations
  • It allows global information sharing to help co-ordinate the work of anti-doping organisations across the world
  • As an online system it is accessible anywhere, anytime
  • It is a user friendly system
  • The information in it is secure, with access rights required for different parts of the system

ADAMS and UK Sport

UK Sport implemented the TUE Management aspect of ADAMS in November 2006 and, as of April 2007, has been using it to co-ordinate Test Selection, Test Management and Results Management. The management of Athlete Whereabouts through ADAMS has been rolled out across sports from July 2007.

Data Protection

ADAMS contains detailed information on athlete whereabouts and test results. As such it is important the information within it is not only secure from a technological point of view, but also in terms of data protection. As such, WADA has issued guidance on the principles of data protection that need to be taken into account.
