Last chance for Fighting Chance - ten days left to sign up for RioSubscribe
UK Sport 09 January 2013
Talented martial artists have ten days left to sign up to the nationwide search for future Olympic taekwondo stars with the potential to compete at Rio 2016.
In conjunction with UK Sport and the English Institute of Sport, GB Taekwondo launched Fighting Chance: Battle4Brazil, a nationwide talent identification programme in November 2012.
So far almost 450 people have signed up, hoping to follow in the footsteps of Olympic champion Jade Jones and bronze medallist Lutalo Muhammad – the latter who triumphed at London 2012 last summer after coming through the first Fighting Chance programme.
Jones and Muhammad, along with world champion Sarah Stevenson and other GB Taekwondo athletes, are all backing the campaign, which will now be taking applications until 7pm on Friday 18 January 2013 to ensure no one misses this opportunity.
Olympic champion and world number one, Jade Jones, began taekwondo at a young age and now trains at the GB Taekwondo Olympic headquarters in Manchester. Jade made the switch from ITF Taekwondo five years ago.
She said: “It’s fantastic that we’ve had so many people sign up for Fighting Chance so far, but it would be great to see even more people get involved.
“WTF Taekwondo is an amazing sport and hopefully our performances in London will have inspired other martial artists to want to give it a go.
“Competing at an Olympic Games was an unbelievable experience, and I would urge anyone who is considering whether to sign up, to do it, it’s a once in a lifetime opportunity.”
Fighting Chance: Battle4Brazil is aimed at high achieving 16-26 year old male and female combat athletes from all kick based martial arts who believe they are capable of transferring to Olympic Taekwondo (WTF style) and making an impact on the medal table in 2016.
The application process is online and further information can be found on the UK Sport website (www.uksport.gov.uk/talent), with the application process closing at 7pm on Friday 18 January 2013.
