Fiona Pennie’s two clear runs in the women’s single kayak, the K1, saw her win a silver medal at the World Slalom Canoeing Championships with a time of 227.41 seconds – the highlight of a successful weekend for Britain’s paddlers in Prague.
Three medals were won in total with Campbell Walsh grabbing bronze in the men’s K1 and the men’s canoe single (C1) team also finishing with a third place on the podium.
Pennie sandwiched champion Jana Dukatova of Slovakia and Jennifer Bongardt of Germany who took third spot, and was understandably delighted with the result.
“After finishing seventh at the Europeans earlier this month I knew if I trained hard and held it together on the day, I could challenge for a medal. Obviously I am delighted that I managed to do it,” said the Scottish born Pennie.
Walsh produced a stunning second run in the men’s K1 to move up from tenth to third to bag his medal. His time was three seconds faster than his first run as he finished in 1:40.82 – just 0.3 of a second behind Julien Billaut of France in second place. Italy’s Stefano Cipressi took gold. The men’s C1 team of Dave Florence, Stuart McIntosh and Dan Goddard finished behind Germany and the host nation respectively to claim their bronze medal with a time of 245.51.
Other notable performances for Britain included Stuart Bowman and Nick Smith finishing seventh in the men’s canoe doubles (C2), with Tim Baille and Etienne Stott coming eighth.
“Before we came to the Championships we were confident in our capability to medal across all four classes,” said Performance Director, John Anderson. “We have come here and proved our ability to perform by winning three medals across two of the classes,” he added.
