In November 2010, UK Sport entered into a unique research and development partnership with Maxinutrition – the UK’s and Europe’s leading sports nutrition company - to investigate the role that nutrition has in improving athletic performance through the training process. From this the team hope to develop a range of bespoke products designed to optimise the performance of, and for sole use by, British athletes in the build-up to 2012.

The Research and Innovation team from UK Sport, its various research partners and Maxinutrition’s New Product Development group will be working together to investigate how various nutrition interventions  can be used to optimize the athlete’s training responses for better performance gain. They will be conducting systematic scientific trials on new combinations of ingredients with groups of highly trained performance athletes.

The research proposals are still in the concept phase and the team will begin work on initial prototypes over the coming months. The outcomes will have multi-sport impact by delivering an even greater evidence base that can be used to support education and understanding of how to utilize nutrition even more effectively during training for performance.

The UK Sport Research & Innovation team manages an ambitious research and development programme; looking at innovation in the areas of training science, performance medicine, equipment and coaching technologies.
Dr Scott Drawer, who heads up the team, comments: “We are delighted to be working with Maxinutrition because their vision is aligned with ours. Their desire for developing relevant evidence for high performance and the desire to understand how best to support the training process is ultimately our goal for our athletes. They share our passion for British Sport and we believe that their expertise combined with ours and that of our key partners should lead to an exciting, innovative partnership.”

The Technical and Performance team from Maxinutrition have a long history of developing bespoke nutritional products for individual sponsors and teams to support them in their training and performance goals.

Technical and Performance Director, Dr Naomi Grant, adds: “This is a fantastic opportunity for Maxinutrition to work alongside UK Sport in what is such a key period for high performance sport in this country.  Having pioneered the drug screening programme for our products in 2002 we are keen to take sports nutrition to the next level and by working with UK Sport who are at the forefront of sporting success we can realize our goals”.

Maxinutrition works with over 1,000 elite athletes, National Governing Bodies and professional sports teams including England Hockey, British Triathlon, British Judo, GB Weightlifting, the England and Wales Cricket Board, the Welsh Rugby Union as well as individuals such as European gymnastics champion Daniel Keatings, Euan Burton, Lee Byrne, Ugo Monye, Stuart Broad, Jermaine Jenas  to name a few.
