UK Sport 19 January 2012

UK Sport’s International Leadership Programme (ILP) participants met last week for the third module of the programme year at Twickenham Stadium.

Following the successful second module in Lausanne at the end of 2011 where the group met with some of the most influential administrators within international sport, last week’s event focused on developing participants’ skills and competencies in operating more effectively in the international sport environment.

The first day of the workshop explored the importance of personal effectiveness and communicating with impact. Philippa Davies, a qualified psychologist specialising in communication skills who has worked with senior politicians and business leaders, delivered a number of practical and interactive training sessions to the group together with Irene Nathan, an experienced personal brand and image consultant.

The formal training sessions were complimented by a session with David Bond, the BBC’s Sports Editor, who explained the importance of personal style and communication within the field of sports journalism.

"In an international context, personal impact and effective communication skills are vital. They can maximise networking and influencing opportunities to raise profile, achieve positioning and gain support for each and every sport", said Philippa Davies who also goes by the pseudonym ‘Mrs Motivator’.

Day 2 of the workshop, delivered by Russell Harlow from TMA World, focused on building cultural intelligence, exploring cultural differences and providing participants with practical advice on communication and approach when engaging with individuals from different cultures. James Macleod, Head of NOC/NPC Services & Relations at the London 2012 Organising Committee for the Olympic & Paralympic Games (LOCOG) also spoke on this theme and in particular how LOCOG has been engaging with and preparing for the arrival of 204 NOCs and 172 NPCs later this summer.

Zara Hyde-Peters, Chief Executive of British Triathlon, said: "The recent ILP session on cross-cultural working delivered some of the most practical tools yet, further developing our skills to work in the international sporting environment. It is always interesting to understand how others perceive us; this session gave us both the insights and the practical tools we can use outside of the course to develop our own strategy for effective international communication."

Launched in 2006, the ILP is one of several UK Sport people development programmes and is part of UK Sport’s commitment to ensure that the UK is able to contribute to the development and governance of international sport. The programme is designed to equip participants with the skills they need to become effective cross-cultural communicators able to operate successfully on the international stage and build relationships with International Federations and other key international sporting organisations.
