Debbie Lye, International Development Director at UK Sport, who has been instrumental in the design and delivery of the pioneering International Inspiration programme, is set to carry the Olympic Torch tomorrow in Grantham.

Debbie has been nominated by the II Foundation in recognition of both her and UK Sport’s vital contribution to International Inspiration, the project that is bringing to life the pledge made by the London 2012 bid team to ‘reach young people all around the world and connect them to the inspirational power of the Games so they are inspired to choose sport’.

International Inspiration is delivered by UK Sport in partnership with the British Council and UNICEF to enrich the lives of more than 12 million children in 20 countries around the world through high-quality and inclusive physical education, sport and play.

Debbie said; “I’m excited and honoured to carry the Torch in recognition of the terrific achievements of International Inspiration, honouring Seb Coe’s Singapore Promise that a London Games would reach out to young people all around the world.

“UK Sport helped to make this happen and we, along with our delivery partners the British Council, UNICEF and the Youth Sport Trust can look back with pride on the past six years; we had an ambitious dream that has, with a lot of hard work and commitment, become a truly inspiring reality that has enriched over 12 million young lives in 20 countries worldwide.”

In recognition of their youth sports leadership activities within International Inspiration one young person from each of the 20 countries touched by the programme will tomorrow act as a Torchbearer carrying the flame through Nottinghamshire. Each Torchbearer has been selected for their commitment to inspiring children and young people in their communities through the universal power of sport.

Debbie continued: “I am especially thrilled that young people from each of those countries, who have played their own part in the success of International Inspiration, will become Torchbearers too.”

Follow Debbie as she carries the torch through Grantham, Lincolnshire, at around 3:45pm.
