UK Sport’s World Class Events Programme (WCEP) has helped to bring a number of high-profile tournaments to the UK this summer, giving fans the chance to watch British athletes compete on home turf.
In addition, the events also give the athletes the opportunity to experience ‘Home Advantage’ as they look ahead to the possibility of representing Great Britain in London in just over three years time.
In August, the WCEP has invested in three World Championships. On the weekend of 15-16 August, both the ITU World Triathlon Championships series and the World Modern Pentathlon Championships come to London. The former takes place in Hyde Park, with the latter being held in Crystal Palace, and a week later, the RS:X and Techno World Championships take place in Weymouth. Meanwhile, from the 25-30 August, the European Show Jumping and Dressage Championships come to Windsor, Taekwondo action is brought to Manchester in the form of the BTCB British A-Class International Championships, and the Wheelchair Rugby World Cup is staged in Sheffield.
Beforehand in July however, the WCEP is supporting the LEN Women’s European Nations Trophy in Manchester, the Mirror World Championships in Pwllheli and the Invacare Wheelchair Tennis World Team Cup in Nottingham.
And looking ahead, the GB Judo World Cup (Birmingham) and the Sail for Gold Regatta (Weymouth) take place in September, whilst the Track Cycling World Cup, as well as the Table Tennis English Open and Netball’s World Series, all come to the UK in October.
“We are delighted that these competitions are taking place in the UK this summer,” said Simon Morton, UK Sport’s Senior Events Consultant. “To bring world class events onto home soil will not only aid the preparation of our athletes, but also event managers, officials and volunteers in the build up to the London Olympic Games."
