The 2010 Sport Journalist Awards were held this week with SJA President, Sir Michael Parkinson, making many of the presentations. The awards, which are sponsored by UK Sport, now encompass writers, broadcasters, photographers and cartoonists.
John Steele, UK Sport’s CEO, presented the award for Interviewer of the Year which went to Donald McRae of The Guardian.
Ex-Test cricketer Michael Atherton, cricket correspondent at The Times, won the top honour of Sports Writer of the Year as well as Columnist of the Year.
Last year’s Ashes cricket series dominated the evening as Sky Sports won TV Programme of the Year for Test Match Cricket and The Daily Telegraph won Team of the Year for their Ashes coverage.
There was a fifth successive victory for Sky Sports’ Jeff Stelling, the only winner of Broadcaster of the Year since its inception in 2005. The award has now been split into TV and radio with Stelling the first winner of TV Broadcaster. BBC cricket correspondent Jonathan Agnew was the first winner of Radio Broadcaster and his Test Match Special team was voted winner of Radio Programme.
Scott Heavey of Action Images scooped The Sports Photographer of the Year award while Sports picture of the year went to an image by PA Sport’s Gareth Copley which last month was named as the world’s best sports photo of 2009 in an international competition.
Paul Kelso from the Daily Telegraph won Sports Story of the Year for the rugby ‘Bloodgate’ scandal while Kevin Eason from The Times and Duncan Mackay from Inside the Games won Internet Writer.
