New shooting range will provide fitting climax to championships

UK Sport Press Release 12 August 2009

A new state-of-the-art shooting range, developed with funding from UK Sport, will form the centrepiece of the action when the Modern Pentathlon World Championships reach their climax at Crystal Palace later this week.

As from the start of this season, the five-event sport now concludes with a combined run/shoot, where athletes shoot at five targets, run 1km, shoot again, run 1km, shoot again and then finally run 1km.

The 2009 World Championships will be the first to world championships to feature the new format, which will also be used at the London 2012 Olympic Games.

With the run/shoot taking place out of doors, a portable and easy to assemble range was required that would also enhance the experience of spectators.

UK Sport worked with Pentathlon GB and Angle Consulting of Bushey, Hertfordshire, on the development of the range, which is lightweight, can be used outside in all weathers, conforms to safety standards and is easy to assemble.

The range has positions for up to 40 shooters and can be easily assembled so it will be consistent whenever it is used.

Peter Hart, Chief Executive of Pentathlon GB, said: “We’re delighted with the shooting range. It’s undoubtedly one of the best of its kind in the world and it will play a central role in this week’s World Championships, as well as at future competitions.”

Perry Cohn, Managing Director of Angle Consulting, said: “Through the UK Sport Research and Innovation Programme Angle Consulting worked with Pentathlon GB in developing a new shooting range.

“The unique range was designed to meet the needs of the sport, is quick to set up and can be used outside in all weather. It conforms to the highest safety standards and brings a high level of professionalism to the sport.”
