Applications for UK Sport’s second Ideas4Innovation: New Researchers Award have closed this week. Applications have been received from more Universities across the UK than in the first year of the scheme.
Ideas4Innovation (I4I) is an award scheme developed by UK Sport’s Research and Innovation team designed to harness the creativity and expertise of the British public to find novel performance solutions for British athletes. The New Researchers Award is aimed at final year undergraduate or masters students, who are invited to submit their final year project, and the Garage Innovators Award is aimed at any sporting enthusiast with a fantastic idea to improve elite performance.
The design or research concept should be completely unique and aimed at enhancing the performance of British athletes in the London 2012 Games in three years time; whether this is improved equipment or clothing, a new training method or coaching aid or even a rehabilitation tool or recovery strategy. Applications are encouraged from those with expertise in engineering, technology, sport science and medicine or even the arts.
The winner of New Researchers 2009 can be awarded up to £25,000 in funding, allowing them to further their studies and research, with exclusivity to the research outcomes maintained for UK Sport and British athletes up until 2012.
UK Sport’s I4I Coordinator Alison Neall said: “We are delighted that we have had more universities from across the UK, including some in Scotland and Wales, endorsing Ideas4Innovation and encouraging their students to apply this year.
"We’re really pleased with the standard of applications, which cover a variety of research topics including training science, equipment and coaching tools. Choosing the top eight finalists, which will present their research to our judging panel, is going to be quite a challenge for us.”
The eight finalists will each receive £500 and will have the opportunity to pitch for the £25,000 top prize in front of a “Dragon’s Den”-style expert panel in July, which will include former Olympic Champion turned Paralympic tandem cyclist and I4I Ambassador, Jason Queally.
For non-students, applications for the Garage Innovators Award 2009 will remain open until 10 July 2009.
