Commenting on the announcements made by the British Olympic Association and British Paralympic Association this week on the selection of 92 athletes from swimming, men’s hockey, equestrian (dressage), judo, water polo, tennis* and women’s football** to Team GB, and 26 athletes from para-cycling and adaptive rowing to ParalympicsGB, UK Sport Chief Executive, Liz Nicholl, said: “Congratulations to the 118 athletes from swimming, men’s hockey, equestrian, judo, water polo, tennis, women’s football, para-cycling and adaptive rowing who have this week been selected to represent Team GB and ParalympicsGB at the London 2012 Olympic and Paralympic Games.
“With less than one month to go to the start of the Olympic Games, and just over 60 days until the start of the Paralympic Games, this week has seen the largest group of athletes selected yet and includes eight reigning Paralympic champions, a men’s hockey squad ranked fourth in the world and our first ever women’s Olympic water polo squad.
“We at UK Sport wish these athletes, as well as all those selected up to this point, the very best of luck in their final preparations, proud to have supported them with £313million of National Lottery, Exchequer and Team 2012 funding over the London cycle [2009-13].”
