Commenting on the recent announcements made by the British Olympic Association and British Paralympic Association on the selection of 16 athletes to Team GB and 18 athletes to ParalympicsGB, UK Sport Chief Executive, Liz Nicholl, said: “Congratulations to the athletes from women’s Hockey, Wheelchair Fencing and Wheelchair Rugby who have this week been selected to represent Team GB and ParalympicsGB at the London 2012 Olympic and Paralympic Games.
“Currently ranked fourth in the world, and recent victors at their Olympic Test Event, the GB women’s hockey squad continues to go from strength to strength as they prepare for the London Olympic Games. The addition of these 16 athletes, who have been backed by a share of the £14.9 million of National Lottery and Exchequer funding awarded to GB Hockey for the London cycle [2009-13], have taken Team GB to over 100 athletes strong.
“Of the 18 athletes selected for the sports of Wheelchair Rugby and Wheelchair Fencing for ParalympicsGB, 12 will be making their Games debuts, with four having competed at two or more Games before, contributing to a fantastic mix of youth and experience in this ever-growing ParalympicsGB team.
“As these athletes enter the final stages of their preparation for the Games, we at UK Sport send them our best wishes and we are proud to have supported Olympic and Paralympic sports with over £312 million for the London cycle of National Lottery, Exchequer and Team 2012 funding.”
