Inspire/Aspire Coach Development Programmes
UK Sport has provided funding for two UK-wide coach development programmes for coaches of high performance athletes operating across all home countries- Inspire and Aspire.
What are the programmes?
Inspire
Inspire is a targeted support programme to coaches of athletes who have the potential to win a medal at the Commonwealth Games in Glasgow in 2014. 21 coaches from 13 sports are on the programme.
Inspire is a targeted support programme to coaches of athletes who have the potential to win a medal at the Commonwealth Games in Glasgow in 2014. 21 coaches from 13 sports are on the programme.
Aspire
Aspire is for coaches who have a realistic aspiration of coaching athletes at future Olympic and Paralympic Games, and Commonwealth Games. 29 coaches from 16 sports are on the programme.
Both programmes are managed by sports coach UK and supported by each of the Home Country Sports Councils. They have been developed for the next generation of coaches who have the potential to progress onto UK Sport’s world class coaching programmes in the future.
How do the programmes work?
The programmes are structured to meet the development needs of each individual coach. This includes:
- completing a series of profile exercises
- regular meetings with their coach developers/mentors
- undertaking a training needs analysis
- developing and implementing personal development plans
- discussing and exploring their coaching values and coaching philosophy
- completing a 360-degree profile.
What’s happened so far?
- First coach-development days held covering;
· managing change; leadership; culture and mental toughness
· sports psychology and life/coaching balance
- Inspire and Aspire web-based communication tool ‘Coach Hub’ developed.
- Individual coach personal development programmes developed and implemented.
- Generic coach-development syllabus developed.
Supporting the coaches through research:
Emma Boocock has been appointed as the Research Officer to gather the latest information to support coaching development – both sport-specific and generic. This work will support the development of coaches on both programmes. The information will be stored on the Inspire and Aspire Coach Hub.
What’s next?
Coach Hub – Phase Two
Phase two of the development of the Coach Hub will see the creation of the Coach Resource Base to support the research element of the programme. A file store for each individual coach and their personal development plans will be housed within this page.
Development Days
The 50 Inspire and Aspire coaches will spend two days together in November. The days will focus on high-performance coach behaviour through a programme of workshops, coaching clinics, and motivational coaches and speakers.
