Following an intensive selection process, fourteen candidates have been invited to join year four of UK Sport’s International Leadership Programme (ILP).
Final selection decisions were made after National Governing Bodies (NGBs) and key partner organisations nominated strong candidates they believe can help them as they seek to increase their presence, credibility and influence on the international stage.
UK Sport’s Head of International Relations, Ben Calveley, explains; “The aim of the ILP is to ensure the UK continually develops individuals capable of working effectively within International Federations (IFs) and other bodies involved in international elite sport at political, technical and administrative level.”
Calveley added: “I am delighted that we have such a high calibre and experienced set of individuals on the programme this year and I look forward to working with them.”
A vastly experienced set of participants will include leaders of Olympic & Paralymic sports, an International Olympic Committee member, as well as current and future IF postholders.
Participants on the programme are:
- Martin Gibbs, Policy and Legal Affairs Director, British Cycling
- Andrew Finding, Chief Executive, British Equestrian Federation
- Adam Pengilly, International Olympic Committee Member
- Jon Amos, Chair IPC Powerlifting, British Weightlifting
- Niels De Vos, Chief Executive, UK Athletics
- Chris Kitchen, Director, British Triathlon Federation
- Jon Napier, ISAF representative, Royal Yachting Association
- Piers Martin, Chief Executive, British Fencing
- Andy Parkinson, Chief Executive, UK Anti Doping
- David Pond, Chief Executive, Great Britain Wheelchair Rugby
- Scott Baird, EHF representative, Scottish Hockey
- Marzena Bogdanowicz, Board Member, Volleyball England
- Tanya Crooks, Chief Operating Officer, Paralympics GB
- Mike Etherington-Smith, Chief Executive, British Eventing
This year’s programme will build on the great success of previous years. On completing the programme year in April 2010, Colin Grahamslaw, Chief Executive of the Royal Caledonian Curling Club said: “The ILP is the best development opportunity I have seen in British sport and it has helped me considerably in securing the Secretary General position within the International Curling Federation (WCF).”
In its fourth year the ILP will offer structured training modules designed to develop cross cultural competencies, including sessions focusing on multi-cultural working and the operating environment of international sport. The course will also offer participants advice and guidance from high profile guest speakers, well respected mentors and an alumni network.
"I am delighted to be joining the ILP" said Martin Gibbs, Policy and Legal Affairs Director with British Cycling. "Having previously worked for president Pat McQuaid at the International Cycling Federation in Switzerland (UCI) I am familiar with the international landscape of cycle sport, but I'm really looking forward to learning more of the wider international environment and I'm sure that I will greatly benefit from working with my fellow participants and the ILP network."
Launched in 2006, the ILP is part of UK Sport’s commitment to continuous improvement of world class personnel and is one of a number of unique and tailored people development programmes.
