Greg Rutherford sensationally won Team GB’s fifth gold medal of the day with a dominant display in the Long Jump. The 25-year-old took the lead in the second round with a leap of 8.21m and never looked back, going on to extend his advantage over the field with an 8.31m jump at his fourth attempt.
Australia's Mitchell Watt took silver with an 8.16m effort, while Will Claye of the United States won bronze with a leap of 8.12m. There was disappointment for the other GB athlete in the final, Chris Tomlinson, who finished sixth with a best of 8.07m. Tomlinson had started strongly and led after the first round of jumps.
It was the first time since 1964 that GB have won the Long Jump at the Olympics when Lynn Davies was took gold and it was undoubtedly the finest moment in Rutherford’s career so far.
