EIS/UK Sport 23 September 2011

Prospective Olympians in Scotland, Wales and the North of England, have just five days left to sign-up for a new initiative, Power2Podium, to recruit talented athletes that have the potential to represent Team GB at future summer and winter Olympics in Rio in 2016 or Pyeongchang in 2018.

The Power2Podium initiative aims to attract athletes with speed and power and assess their suitability for joining talent development programmes in athletics, sprint canoeing, sprint cycling, weightlifting, skeleton, bobsleigh and rugby sevens.

It has been developed by the UK Talent Team, which is a joint venture between UK Sport and the English Institute of Sport (EIS), and has already attracted more than 1,000 applicants from around the UK.

The final deadline for applications is Wednesday 28 September 2011.  Those that are interested in applying should visit www.uksport.gov.uk/talent  where they can fill-in a short questionnaire to assess their suitability to attend one of the forthcoming assessment days at:

• University of Wales Institute, Cardiff (UWIC), 8-9 October 2011
• Loughborough University, 15-16 October 2011
• Leeds University, 22-23 October 2011
• sportscotland Institute of Sport (SIS), Stirling, 29-30 October 2011

Natalie Dunman, Lead Talent Scientist for the EIS, explained: “To date, there have been over 1000 applications from all corners of the UK, with a ratio of 1.5 male applicants to every one female. This shows improvement on the previous uptake from the female population to such campaigns, which has tended to be around 3:1. Uptake in Scotland, Wales and the North has also increased, but the UK Talent Team is keen to see more applications from these areas as they have proven to be hotbeds for uncovering talented athletes in past campaigns.

“This campaign will help us boost our talent pool ahead of the next Olympic cycle, and be more proactive in the way we identify and develop elite talent.

“We have a proven track record of success through this approach; previous campaigns have produced 65 international medals at junior, U23 and senior level, including thirteen at World Championships, the twelfth and thirteenth being won earlier this month at the Rowing World Championships by Helen Glover and Vicky Thornley, who were discovered in 2007 through 'Sporting Giants'.

"So, if you’ve got speed, strength and power and think you might have what it takes to win medals for Great Britain, we want to hear from you.”

If you think you have what it takes don’t miss this once in a lifetime opportunity to be part of Britain’s Olympic ambitions. Sign up now at www.uksport.gov.uk/talent
