Campbell gives maiden speech in House of Lords

Lee Taylor 18 June 2009

Baroness Sue Campbell CBE, Chair of UK Sport, made her maiden speech today in the House of Lords, speaking at the debate on the London 2012 Olympic and Paralympic Games.

Baroness Campbell, who is also the Chair of the Youth Sport Trust, was appointed a life peer in December 2008 in recognition of her contribution to sport and education in the UK.

In her speech, which was well received and commended by those immediately following her including Lord Moynihan, Chair of the British Olympic Association, Campbell told the Chamber that the London Games in 2012 should be just the beginning of sustainable change in sport in the UK. In addition she also spoke of the international legacy that the Games will leave, highlighting the work being done by the London 2012 International Inspiration programme.

“I am absolutely delighted to have made my maiden speech in the House of Lords today,” said Baroness Campbell. “I am very proud to have been recognised by the Lords for my achievements. My passion remains as strong as ever and I very much look forward to working with fellow peers to drive forward sport in the UK - both at elite level and within the education system."

Lord Coe, who called today's debate, said: "I have seen Sue’s dedication to sport first hand in the thirty years I have known her, and I’m delighted that her outstanding achievements in the world of sport have been recognised in this way. She will be a great supporter and champion of the inspirational power of sport, and I know the whole House will benefit from her intimate understanding of sporting issues.”
