Commenting on the success of Amy Williams at the Vancouver Games, John Steele, Chief Executive of UK Sport, said:

“It takes a lot of endeavour, sacrifice and team work to win an Olympic medal and I would like to congratulate Amy, British Skeleton and all those behind the scenes who have contributed to this success.

British Skeleton received a record £2.1m of Lottery and Exchequer funding for Vancouver through UK Sport and led by Performance Director Andi Schmid, they provide a great example of a sport working in partnership to achieve success on the world stage. Their success in Turin, alongside their willingness to engage with partners, gave us the confidence in their current performance and future potential. This is at the heart of our ‘no compromise’ approach to investing in success.

They have worked tirelessly with UK Sport, the English Institute of Sport and with various science and technology partners such as BAE Systems and the University of Southampton, to ensure the best programme is in place for their athletes. This has included cutting edge techniques in terms of the athletes’ physical conditioning and preparation, as well as the kit and equipment for use in competition. They have also been working together with the UK Talent Team (UK Sport & EIS) to identify talented athletes competing in other sports who could compete for medals in future Games.

Congratulations to British Skeleton, Amy and all of the team, their success is very much deserved.”
