THE FIRST major athletics event of the year, the IAAF World Indoor Athletics Championships, gets underway in Lisbon on Friday. Traditionally this event sees a mixture of experienced performers and young potential fighting it out for honours. The British team is no exception with the likes of Sydney Gold medallist Jonathan Edwards (triple-jump) competing alongside exciting prospects such as Danny Caines (400m) and Mark Lewis-Francis (60m).
The event is the high-point of a busy indoor athletics season and the Great Britain and Northern Ireland team will be keen to repeat the success of their last appearance in this event in Maebashi (Japan) two years ago where they returned with three Gold and two Bronze medals.
The highlights of a packed three-day programme include:
Friday 9th March 10.30am (all times are GMT) Men’s Triple Jump final (Jonathan Edwards) 5.20pm Men’s 200m semi-finals (Christian Malcolm & Allyn Condon)
Saturday 10th March

For the 20-strong British squad, the championships will act as a launch pad for their outdoor season that includes August’s World Championships in Edmonton, Canada. Observers from Britain, who will play host to the next Indoor World Championships in Birmingham in 2003, will closely follow the Lisbon event.
