AN EXTENDED British Track Cycling Endurance squad leaves the UK tomorrow for a month of training and racing on the island of Majorca. The highlight of the trip will be the Cinturón Internacional, a five-day UCI road race that takes place between 28th March and 2nd April. For the first time there will be two British teams competing - a Great Britain 'A’ Team, managed by National Road Team Manager John Herety, and a 'B’ team managed by Sandy Gilchrist.
The squad of twelve, which contains seven riders on the British Cycling Federation’s World Class Performance Programme, comprises Ben Elliott, Bradley Wiggins, Bryan Steel, Rod Ellingworth, Tony Gibb, James Taylor, Paul Manning, Chris Newton, Steve Cummings, Phil West, Julian Ramsbottom and Huw Pritchard. Also in attendance in Majorca will be Track Endurance Coach Simon Jones.
THERE WAS good news from Australia for British Cycle Speedway fans at the weekend with individual success for two English riders.
Dave Hemsley took his second World Individual Cycle Speedway Championship at the Findon track with a fine tactical performance, and Steve Harris finished in third place after a ride-off with Matthew Gentle of Australia.
And British Eurosport have announced that they are extending their coverage of the 2001 Tour de France. The improved coverage will include a highlights programme every evening for those viewers who cannot catch the live coverage during the day.
In total, British Eurosport will broadcast almost 150 hours of the race.
