THE FULL Great Britain and Northern Ireland Team for the IAAF World Indoor Athletics Championships in Lisbon in March has been announced.
Max Jones, UK Athletics Performance Director, commented: "The team is a balance between the established performer and the emerging athlete. I see the World Indoor Championships as an opportunity for athletes to use the championship as a stepping-stone for outdoor success.
"For the past three seasons, the respective indoor championship has provided the Great Britain and Northern Ireland Team with a successful start to the track and field season and I am sure that Lisbon will do the same."
JAMIE BAULCH, a member of UK Athletics’ World Class Performance Programme, will captain the team. On accepting the appointment, Jamie looked forward to the championships:
"As defending champion (400m) I am disappointed that I have not been selected for an individual place, but I think we have a good chance of breaking the 4x400m world record. I am honoured to have been asked to be team captain and will do my best to encourage and support the team."
Meanwhile fellow World Class Performance athlete Dean Macey has been forced to withdraw from the team with a hamstring injury:
"I have a slight hamstring pull which has not cleared up. Although I am still training, I am unable to put in the quality work to enable me to compete with distinction. This is a short term injury and does not affect my aspirations for the 2001 season," Dean explained.
