UK SPORT chief executive Richard Callicott joins a distinguished cast of leading figures from the world of sport speaking at the Bid to Benefit conference in Manchester immediately following the Commonwealth Games.
Organised by the Manchester Investment & Development Agency Service, the conference from 5-7 August will examine the business of bidding for and staging international sports events with representatives from a number of major championships including the Football World Cup, the Ryder Cup and the Winter Olympics on hand to pass on their experiences.
UK Sport is the agency responsible for attracting major events to the UK. Through the World Class Events Programme, more than £1.5 million of Lottery funding is invested each year in bidding and staging costs. Since its inception five years ago, the programme has supported more than 70 events of World, European and Commonwealth status throughout the UK.
"The Commonwealth Games will provide a timely reminder of the UK’s ability to host the world’s biggest events," explained Callicott, who will lead a session on the reasons to bid for the Olympic Games and the economic benefits of winning. "The impressive list of speakers and comprehensive agenda will provide an ideal opportunity for interested parties throughout the UK to gain a valuable insight into the bidding process."
Other confirmed speakers for the conference include Michel Zen-Ruffinen, the outgoing general secretary of FIFA, and Danny Jordaan, who oversaw South Africa’s bid for the 2006 Football World Cup finals. International Olympic Committee President Jacques Rogge will make a video address to delegates.
