The International Canoe Federation awarded the British Canoe Union the right to host the first in a series of Canoe Slalom World Cups for 2012. This will be held at Cardiff International White Water. The ICF World Cup Series are held annually and consist of up to 5 races taking place around the world, with the Cardiff event taking place during 8–10 June 2012.
The event is expected to attract around 250 high caliber athletes many of whom will be participating in the London 2012 Olympics. This first event of the 2012 series will provide a timely, essential and beneficial race or the top British and International Athletes in very close proximity to the London Olympic Games, thus for the selected athletes for London 2012 this will provide an enhancing performance opportunity and prepare them well for the Games. Athletes will compete in each of the following categories – K1 Men, K1 Women, C1 Men and C2 Men.
The Cardiff International White Water centre opened in March 2010. The 250+ meter hairpin-shaped course can generate and release up to 16 cubic meters of water per second when being used for full international competitions. www.ciww.com
